Title: Translators needed for Elxis 2008 installer
Post by: datahell on September 22, 2007, 22:39:07
We have just completed Elxis 2008 installer. It is totally new although it looks a little like the one from the 2006.x generation.

New features:
- New design with many rounded corners.
- Detects your browser language on your first visit and loads the corresponding language.
- Creates the database if it does not exist
- Supports file based databases like FireBird, InterBase and MS Access.
- Supports Sample Data packages / extensibility support.
- Has FTP support enabled.
- Is fully RTL compatible.
- Has automatic site offset calculator.
- Full object oriented

Features that removed:
- Elxis site registration
- File/Directory permissions change (you can do that from the administration area).

We need volunteers to translate Elxis 2008 installer to their native language.
I attach a zip file which is the english language to have as base.

What is for translation?
2 files:
english.install.php (arround 235 lines, 3-4 hours work)
english.gpl.html
Also for each language a country flag must be included (gif 23X12 pixel). It is optional, we will add it if you can n't find/create one.

How do I begin translating?
Whoever wants to translate Elxis installer has to download the zip and write a post just bellow declaring that he/she took over the translation to that specific language inorder not to have 2 or more users translating the same language.

Where do I send the final files?
You send them via e-mail at datahell [AT] elxis [DOT] org AND to ia [AT] goup [DOT] gr (incase the e-mail wont arrive to the first address we will receive it from the second)

Translation guidelines:
1. Rename "english" to your language to the included files (ie from english.install.php to italian.install.php)
2. Use a text editor that support utf-8 such as PsPad.
3. Translate everything keeping the format and the line numbers as the initial file. The final file should be an exact copy of the original. (only for xxxxx.install.php)
4. For the gpl file you may find a ready translated copy on the web (at gnu site). If not, and you got bored with it you can ommit translating it and keep the english one. We only need the english.install.php file translated.
5. Add translator information (yours) in the header of the english.install.php file following the sample.

Please whoever wants to volunteer must work fast and take care the translation. We do not accept changes later.
Thank you very much, welcome 2008!

Thank you very much Farhad. You were really fast!

For any other wishes to translate please FIRST post here that you take over the translation inorder to know that someone has taken care that specific language. Notice that especially for the Elxis installer the text is short and there is NO option to translate it after Elxis 2008 release! We would like Elxis installer to be translated in as many languages as possible. Thanks.

Thanks to news-blitz, Ivan, Coursar and pingvin.
Thanks also to perists and Seiyoku for their contribution.

Ivan I need to know the proper locale for Sprski. Should I add sr (serbian cyrilic) or en (english)? We must solve this issue. Locale affects mostly the displayed time format but it is also important for optimization reasons (following the standards).
Title: Re: Translators needed for Elxis 2008 installer
Post by: Ivan Trebješanin on September 24, 2007, 18:48:11
Well, as always, trouble with serbian locale... since this summer it should change from SR and YU to RS for two letters and SRB for three letters... I'd stick with array of RS followed by SR@UTF-8... And there is NO KNOWN solution for Serbian latin, especially in UTF-8. So, leave english locale for serbian latin.
Title: Re: Translators needed for Elxis 2008 installer
Post by: datahell on September 24, 2007, 18:48:36
Ooops, Ivan!
You have map "serbian" language to "serbian latin" and "srpski" to "serbian cyrilic"! I think the right one is the oposite. Is it? Also you have set locale to both languages to rs. I think (I am sure 99.9%) that the right one for Serbian cyrilic is sr and that there is no locale for serbian latin. Please tell me how you think we should map serbian languages.

Serbian latin -> elxis name? --> locale = en
Serbian cyrillic -> elxis name? --> locale = rs or sr ?

Notice that in most servers rs locale DOES NOT exist. sr will display the right results (serbian cylliric). You can test this in your own server (command: locale -a )...
For example in my server I have for serbian:
sr_CS
sr_CS.iso88595
sr_CS.utf8

Check also your browser. What does it says?
For example mine:
Mozilla/5.0 (Windows; U; Windows NT 5.1; el; rv:1.8.1) Gecko/20061010 Firefox/2.0

You can see this from Firefox toolbar -> help -> about mozilla firefox
Title: Re: Translators needed for Elxis 2008 installer
Post by: Ivan Trebješanin on September 24, 2007, 18:59:22
I named cyrillic version srpski, because it's pronounced that way in Serbia (official language), and serbian latin version (as more international) serbian. Users from my site suggested that, so I listened to them. :) Since ISO has accepted RS as two letter acronym for Serbia, but it will take some time for everyone to adjust to that, cyrillic version could be SR, and the latin version could stay EN.
Title: Re: Translators needed for Elxis 2008 installer
Post by: datahell on September 24, 2007, 19:02:57
Ok, I map everywhere these:

Serbian latin
Elxis name: serbian
Locale: sr_CS.utf8
2-letter code: rs

Serbian cyrillic
Elxis name: srpski
Locale: sr_CS.utf8
2-letter code: rs

Edit: 2-letter code right one is RS. I put the same for "serbian" and "srpski"!

Post by: Ivan Trebješanin on September 24, 2007, 19:25:44
Locale: sr_CS.utf8 is cyrillic, as it is official for Serbia. And, as I said, there is NO LATIN locale for Serbia, that's why I suggested leaving it EN.  With sr_CS.UTF8 dates will be cyrillic, but I guess that's OK, too. ;)

Yes, I know... installer language is a little bit tricky. Anyway, as datahell said, it will be impossible to change language pack afterwards, so it is better to think for one more day, then to publish unfinished file. I was doing translation for two days, although it could be done in a couple of hours! And don't bother to translate words like Magic quotes, Register Globals, etc. People who know what these settings are used for will understand them better in english, anyway.

Hello all,

Spanish translation, however:

Is the 2008 version available so I can test it, language-wise. This is because there are some words in Spanish that cannot be literally translated so I need to see the entire sentence or paragraph in order to choose the proper translation.

Thank you very much all. We can not give Elxis to anyone yet. Some Elxis Community members will soon receive the Elxis installer (only) to check it for some things we wish to look into more. Elxis 2008 is still under development, for example it does not have a template yet! We can not release it even as beta! Try to do your best with what you have in your hands. Take your time, it's not a race. The files I received till now were fine.

Regarding the Finnish translation: Please try to complete it. We can not add it semi-translated. Check a vocabullary if you dont understand something.

Special thanks to farhad for his help on making Elxis installer RTL compatible.

We have added a feature in Elxis installer that detects your browser's language and loads installer in your own language automatically (like when you visit google's site). By adding more translations this feature will become even better.

Sorry folks, I do apologize but the timing on this is not the best for us. We will wait for the 2008 release, test it and then proceed from there.

If someone else is interested please go ahead and do the Spanish translation and I wish you the best of luck.

Thank you ricard.

Once again I feel that it is necessary to tell that we wont forget those that helped Elxis development in any way. But this does not mean that you should volunteer in order to take something back (Elxis is Open Source). We have a gift for you but this is something that should not be the reason for helping elxis. Elxis project will support those that helped it now, when your help was needed. For us i.e. farhad is our representative in Iran no matter if 1000 others will please us in the future and this is because he helped us now. Farhad site's is the official Elxis community site in Iran because he gained this title with his work. This is valid for other users too.

The translation and Elxis multilingual system made for you, not for us (Elxis Team). If you dont want Elxis ie in Chinese we dont care, we dont speak chinese! The translations are FOR YOU and other people from your country.

I am very sorry xos. Not for not helping, I understand that you may be busy, but I am sorry for your answer (you have a lack of faith to Elxis CMS).

Finally I would like to thank ricard in public as we used some ideas taken from a sample template he created some months ago for Elxis 2008 backend.

Mr. datahell,

... (you have a lack of faith to Elxis CMS).

This remark by you is not accurate, unprofessional and really uncalled for in public. If you have an issue with my decision please use the private channels. Thank you.

My team was going to do the translation, however as I said before in this quote:

Hello all,

Spanish translation, however:

Is the 2008 version available so I can test it, language-wise. This is because there are some words in Spanish that cannot be literally translated so I need to see the entire sentence or paragraph in order to choose the proper translation.

I never even got a reply to this.

When you release 2008, we will look at it. We will do some testing on it and see what happens. Asking for collaboration in a totally untested (public wise) script is not how we do work. Testing only by you and your devs is not enough, you need to realease it into the masses. That's where your script really shows what it's worth. But hey! You should already know this.

Title: Re: Translators needed for Elxis 2008 installer

xos, my friend

Don't get offended... I have no intention to speak on datahells behalf, but you should understand things better. I'll take my example to illustrate my point of vew.
I work TOTALY ALONE on translations to serbian, and, believe me, I face the exactly the same problems you are. Sure, I would like to have Elxis 2008 installed and test my translation, but it is not the way Elxis Team operates. Imagine, as an exaple, translation of Help System wich have 100 pages and keeping track of translations (there could be many) you used in Elxis frontend or backend, but you have a team at least. I go with Elxis because I have chosen it from the number of other solutions. This is because I believe in it's future, and I go with the flow. I believe that's what datahell had in mind. But he will explain himself. If you trust, you trust fully. You can always create Elxis local support site and publish latest translations on it, fix mistakes based on comments of your members and Elxis users.

Best regards,
Ivan

Post by: datahell on November 09, 2007, 20:16:14
For reasons we have said many times we can not give elxis source to anyone right now. You will do the same thing if you were in our position. So you have to work this way. In a month or two after 2008.0 release we will have the first elxis update (2008.1) inorder language and other minor importance issues to be fixed if needed. Sorry if I was a little offensive but I think your answer was against us and all those that support Elxis 2008 without having taken nothing back till now.

We know how other open source projects work, we have participated in some of them in the past. We know about beta testing and the proper way of development. I understand that you have to have elxis 2008 itself inorder to make a good translation. I would ask the same if I were you. We would like to follow an other way but we can not. So we need your help under these circumstances, if you dont like this it's ok. No one is forced to help. Elxis community members have extended information on the 2008 version and parts of Elxis source code. For example the whole Elxis installer has been send to some of them. Elxis installer is not like mambo's or joomla's it is something totally different. ricard has taklen a large part of Elxis administration in the past. Other users have taken the new media component etc. But no one has the whole Elxis. Elxis 2008 SVN version is 32mb and changes daily. I can not just e-mail it to you, you need access to Elxis SVN. How many projects you know that give access to their source repositories to unknown people?

Regarding the source code quality: The quality of Elxis 2008 is the best possible under the circumstances that we work. You most probably know that Elxis has been based on Mambo. We have totally re-written the whole source code making it more secure and compact but we can not change everything from scratch for compatibility reasons. For example we would like to make the front-end's language object oriented like backend's language. We have already make some thoughts for the 2010 version totally diferrent from the mambo's logic.

Regarding bugs: Elxis 2006.x and 2008.x installer have one "bug". They need mysql 4.1+ and safe mode off. Elxis does not work under safe mode and in old mysql versions. So, there was a certain point in elxis 2006.x installation procedure that installer may fail. But if you paid attention to the Elxis specifications you would know that before reaching this point. So specifications are now bugs? Which are the bugs you are talking about?  Oh, yes there are some minor importance issues that fixed in 2008 but they are no important. For example we have make a lot of changes in bots and speed improvement but this does not prohibites you to use 2006.4.

I read something in your forum and I would like to answer here: We have never deleted an article. We say our opinion in public and we dont take anything back. There is no need to make backup posts! This is not Joomla!

Dear Datahell, following your last reply to the guest nicknamed xos:

"There is no need to make backup posts! This is not Joomla!"

>>I'm active in the Joomla community and now I'm here for discovering E2008 as I like to explore new CMSs and above all for the common brothership among Mambo/Joomla/Elxis... I don't understand what you mean but I'm sure it is a simple word game joking.

"For reasons we have said many times we can not give elxis source to anyone right now."

>> IMHO I think that the spanish guy is a clever honest one as he's right about how doing the best work and you know, as everybody, a good work is faster than a re-work... or simply that sometimes a not-perfect work - sometimes - remains a never-ending work-to-do but you have considered the pros and cons and in this case you have to do it. Considering your posts It's the right behaviour.

"We have already made some thoughts for the 2010 version totally different from the mambo's logic."

>> Mambo 2010 will be under "Cake-PHP logic" and certainly will be very different from any older Mambo's versions.

Stop. I'd like to tell you that in these days I'm deeping better into Elxis projet and I'd like to espress to you and your team my sincerely compliments!
Exited for the newcoming E2008,
bye

Returning to our talk.
To newart: When I say diferrent than the mambo's logic I don't mean the framework (i.e. CakePHP)  this is how you finally do something. I mean the idea behind all these. Examples: We don't like the menu system and the Itemid's (the base of the page appearence on an Itemid generates oftently bad layout). We don't like the search method and the bots (today you have no global control over the search procedure, you can not for example limit the total results or order them based on their similarity etc). We don't like the seperate logins in front-end and backend. We would also like to reduce the number of parameters and make extensions setup more easy. These are only a few of the areas that most probably will change in Elxis 2010.

Your ideas are a good start for the project evolution! Most of them are mine too...

you apologize for the delay  ::)

First of all thanks for the italian translation !
Hi just installed the italian version and I've spot that there are some little sintax error in the translation; The major is in the Button "AVENTI" that should be "AVANTI"  ;).

theprincy, please can you fix it ?

Italiano

Ciao innanzitutto grazie per la traduzione in italiano.
Installando ELXIS 2008 mi sono accorto che ci sono dei piccoli errori di distrazione nella traduzione; il più appariscente è il bottone "Avanti" della fase di installazione che recita "AVENTI".
Se posso permettermi un consiglio rileggi i testi con l'installer davanti.
In ogni caso gran bel lavoro. Grazie di nuovo per il tuo impegno.
Ciao  ;)
