Elxis and SEO

I just tested my brand new installation of elxis for the size/performance... I was just supprised (not pleasently) when I saw that index was cca 200KB!!! I used very light template, so I expected it would be easier. Also, the nuber of objects on the page was pretty high. Anyway, just wanted to get someone's attention, I'm still with elxis 100% and hope that this topic will just help elxis to get better.

I suggest, to enable the gzip compression from the global configuration.

I was just thinking, isn't enabling compression harder for server? Question was more of hypotetic nature... I thought: if index.php would consist of less objects, it would be lighter (I'm an optimisation maniac). Then I hacked a little bit, and I think I have the solution. But I currently have no time to get into it deeper, as I master lots of pages, but promise to let you know what I found out soon.

Elxis is a full featured CMS. Its size increased to 5MB regarding to the 2MB of the Mambo that was based on. Elxis is not a lightweight CMS although it reacts very good and fast enough. We are people that live in today. Computers and internet have been evolved very much in the last 5 years. To day 200KB for a page is nothing (in the past when I created websites I had as upper limit 75KB/page) when the most users have broadband connections and servers have fast processors. Go open the most well known news portals on the web. Go for example at bbc.co.uk or at cnn.com and check the size of the page there. Elxis page size is zero related to these. What have to say for that? I dont think there is a heavy load issue in Elxis CMS.

I must say that where I live most internet connections are made through 56K modems, and with Telecom around (most people on analog central) it practically NEVER exceedes 33K!!! And, as I said, I'm a maniac in optimisation and still make pages below 30K, wich makes my sites faster then 70% sites on internet (alexa). I'm now about to set a new e-zine on a slow server, so compression is also out of a question... Now you know what s*** I'm swimming in.

Please try to change your template.

I have seen huge deferences between templates.

With a normal template such us "Alpha 2006" from the developer webrevolution.org the index page are 13.47 kb without gzip, and 2.26 with gzip.

So I recommend you to change your template.

I was  as using JoomlaArts Arcus, wich is just as lite... It's the content, that really changes things, and the background engine, of course. I managed to somewhat lighten Joomla!, but I hate UTF-8 hacks I have to implement to make it work for me (I'm form Serbia). Data gathered from my sites say that there is more and more broadbend users every day, so hopefully I won't have to use those hacks anymore (soon enough), and keep things simple with Elxis. lol
