Captcha image broken

I have searched in the forums, but cannot locate an answer. My captcha displays a broken image and the sound says Something is wrong. I found another post about the Something is wrong, but I'm not installed in a sub domain, I'm on my local machine in the root htdocs folder. As far as I can tell, everything else is OK. I had no problems with installation and everything else is working as expected. This is the only thing. I just want to test how the user pages work before going live. I'm still tinkering.

i m not sure if this is the correct solution but once i had the same problem as you , i reinstaled folder mysite\includes\captcha and since then it works perfect 
as you can see i m newbe in the forum so if i m wrong... sorry

As you fix it by re-uploading the files, it means that you have NOT upload correct all the files, CHECK them via the hash file.

ks-net assumed that you have check your Elxis stracture, and the next correct answer is the "gd" library.
