Title: Admin entry ..."Disappears" ! Updated Elxis too easily Blocked ? (partly SOLVED)
Post by: Sunlight on August 20, 2016, 04:22:54
After having followed all the Instructions for updating Elxis to the 4.3 and even 4.5 (latest) version, suddenly, without any warning, the entry point reserved for the "Administration" vanished from all the Templates and Browsers that we had used earlier without any problem, so that it has now become impossible to Lodge in as Administrator and complete the new version of our Website, (despite many Hours of Hard Work) !

Repeating anew all or part of a cumbersome Updating process, and/or changing Templates, etc., didn't help at all : On the contrary, even Templates and Sites which had been, initialy Accessible in a normal way, suddenly started to be Blocked in an astonishingly similar way : i.e. the point of entry to the Administration interface "Vanished", seems to be Nowhere, and even various, incomprehensible, so-called ..."Security" pretexts (entirely Unexplained) suddenly emerged in order to Block us Out of our new Website, (that we had just started to build with some very Hard and Long, Time and Energy consuming Efforts).

Has Elxis become so Vulnerable to sly Hackers' Aggressions, or is somebody playing thorny games with "Defender" (who has provoked Various such problems recently, as many denounced at the forum) ?

Is there any simple way to find urgently a Solution to the apparent Mystery of such an unprecedented problem ?

Thanks in advance for anyone who might be able to find a prompt, clear and efficient reply.

Hello @Sunlight
It's really important to answer, and before start blaming anyone,  the following questions:
- Is your website hosted to a shared server or it is on a dedicated one?
- Are you sure that the only script installed on a server was the Elxis CMS?

I quote below a link with how to secure your site [1] as i believe that it's relative to this subject.

The problem is that you can't find the login page for the administration console? I don't see writing an other problem.
The "entry point reserved for the Administration" is just a folder by default named estia which you can rename to whatever you want. You can even delete it and Elxis will continue functioning perfect. It has nothing to do with templates and browsers. example.com/estia/ and the login page is there.

If you have updated from 4.2 to 4.3+ and you can't login in Elxis it is because you didn't read the instructions despite you write the opposite.

Download Elxis 4.2 to 4.3 patch (https://www.elxis.net/edc/core/100.html) and read the including README.txt file. It is very important because the password encryption method changed in Elxis 4.3. The answer to your problem is there.

If you need further help write the exact problem you have and be more polite.

Hi, "Webgift".

Thanks for finding "really Important to Answer" our Thread's Query.

Your data might be useful in general terms.

But, unfortunately, they don't provide any Solution, whatever, to our concrete Problem, (as mentioned above).

(F.ex., among others, even the "defender.bans" had Nothing inside to erase, and Changing the "defender" level, or even Stopping it, inside "configuration.php", didn't solve anything perceptible).

Thank you, Dear "Datahell" :

- That Problem was, indeed, mainly about the "Login page for Administration console", which had, Curiously, "Disappeared" from that Same Template that we had Before the Last Updates.

-  Your Reply really Helped us to Find anew, (even if Elsewhere), such a "Login" for the "Administration" Panel, and that's obviously a Good practical step forward.

+ After a Strange, initial Refusal to allow entry, Later-on, Curiously (i.e. without us doing anything better, in this regard), when we Returned after 10 or 20 minutes, it re-Started to Work, by Allowing us to Enter anew, at last, to our Admin. Panel !

=> Let's Hope this stays OK also in Future.

Because, particularly these Last Days, around Elxis' Updates, astonishingly, we apparently faced, from the Start, Many and Various E-Aggressions, probably by some Sly Hacker. (F.ex., among others, even on simply UpLoading Elxis 4.3 to our Site, on Trying to Use our Admin Panel afterwards, on using Elxis' Converter, etc., and, "finaly", that strange "Disappearance" of the Admin Login link/page, which existed initialy, followed even by Unprecedented Blockades of simply UnZiping a Fresh Copy of 4.3, in order to Try to Repeat the process anew, Hoping to have Better Results, etc. : It's all as if some Sly Hacker was repeatedly Aggressing our Internet Connection, Site and even Computer, via the Web. At a moment, even a Strange, Grotesque Figure -as a Wild Cat !- Suddenly Poped Up on our Screen, and Disappeared afterwards. Never seen such Things during Decades of Working with the Web...As if someone would strive to Undermine the use of Elxis, at least in our case, among its Oldest, Long-term Fans)...

------------------

We really DID read and follow all the Instructions which directly concerned what we were doing, (according to Elxis Website's advice) :

=> In fact, that did NOT include "update from 4.2 to 4.3", simply Because what we had to do was to Update a 200x Version of Elxis DIRECTLY to the Latest 4.3 Version that Elxis' "Converter" allows, (according to your own previously published Notes).

Thus, we have read and followed all technical instructions concerning Uploading and Installing Directly the Version 4.3 as such, Uploading and Installing the Converter, using the (long) process of that Converter, (etc).

+In Addition, we also managed to Update also to Versions 4.4 and 4.5 (the Latest until Now), even if we had to do that Manually, i.e. by uploading "One by one" each File, (among the Many concerned), via FTP, for Both these 2 supplementary Updates, (which do Not seem to be covered by the Converter yet).

That was, already, a lot of things to do..., (which, usually, doesn't arrive in several other Website Softwares, for whom Updates are often much more Easy).

But, (IF it works), that Elxis' "Converter" (from 200X to 4.3), was, naturaly, a much Needed, and long overdue Progress, (compared to the Past). Let's Hope that it would be itself Updated and Ameliorated in the foreseable Future, (since that would enhance Elxis' Efficiency and Fame).

The answer to your problem is there. ...
--------------------------

We did as you advised., Dear "Datahell". It was, indeed, instructive, in general.

But, in rel Practice, it appeared Impossible to Solve the Problem in that way, because :

- (A) the 1st File that you mentioned, (even if we made the Modifications that you advised), didn't provide any Positive Change, taken alone in itself.

- (B) the 2nd File that you mentioned, Curiously was Not there, (Neither inside our copy of Elxis 4.3, Nor at a 4.2 Version's file, as afterwards uploaded)...

=> Thus, we were practicaly Hindered to do Everything that you advised in that 2nd Part (See above), and obliged to leave those things as they were before...

However, at least for the Time being, fortunately, it still seems Possible to re-Lodge, at last, in the Administration Panel, by following the Pathway that you have indicated Earlier (See above).

For the Particular Point raised in this Thread, your Practical Advise (See the 1st Part of our Reply, above), apparently Succeeded, at least for the Moment, to Solve this Specific Problem ! You always look Really quite Efficient, also in Practice, Dear "Datahell"...

And we Hope that this would also Serve to provide a Useful Input for "Elxis" Community's collectively build Knowledge-Base in this interesting Forum.

But your Guess was Right : Indeed, there are, almost at the Same Time, also several Other (perhaps even More Important) "Elxis" Issues to Examine and Solve, that we might, eventualy, Share also here, as soon as possible, (IF there is enough Free Time, at this Exceptionaly OverLoaded period, at least in our area of activities).

--------------------------------------

After being, during almost a Decade (2007 - 2016), one amidst the most Long-Standing and Faithful "Elxis"' fans in real practice, (having Started and Worked for a Long Time with some among the First, Pioneer Versions, including one that You used to Like very much, as you have revealed in the Past : "Olympus 2008", etc), naturaly, we also had a quite Large Experience of this Useful "Elxis" Forum, where almost All People that we've met looked more or less Helpful and Interesting, so that we've have always been correct and Kind vis a vis all of them, (since we also Like very much the Useful Idea of Building, all Together, a "Collective Intelligence", according to Experienced Users' various real Practical Needs, in interaction and exchange with Able Technical Experts, which Becomes more and more Interesting and even Valuable, as Time goes by, Year by Year, proving that you are Right to Consistently Point and Guide "Elxis" Users towards this Practical Forum, with its useful "Search" Function, (in Addition to some "Wiki"-like, Good "Theoretical" Documentation).

So that, During 10 Years, it's mainly Only 1 (comparatively "NewComer") Individual, who, Once, appeared curiously attempting to Bully us quite Negatively, with Personal Attacks and Not any really Useful Info for some Important concrete Issues raised then, in a way that we (and Others, who saw what had Exceptionaly Happened then) found Contrary to the "Open Source" Movement's most Important General Principles, (some of which You have also Personaly Defended, later-on, also in a quite "Firm" way, Dear "Datahell", as it results even from some Other Exchanegs that you had with Other People, including at this Forum), as well as quite Deviant regarding the "Netiquette"'s Moral Ethics and Pioneer Spirit which used to Guide the World Wide Web right from its Epic Historic Beginning, since Back in the Nineties (1991-1993+).

This (fortunately Isolated and Unique) incident had some very Nasty Consequences in our Social, Professional and even Family life, which seriously Suffered quite a lot from some Serious Damages provoked almost immediately then, considering also a special Real Context made out of Lack of sufficient Time, Urgent Needs to find an Efficient and Trustworthy, Practical Help, as well as Various Other Challenges to Face, then, (Both for us and Many Other People, for whom we Had the Duty to Act Urgently in certain Collective Socio-Political and other Issues), in Real Life. That's why, we were Obliged to take the Unusual Decision to, Exceptionaly, Stop Writting in the Forum for almost 4 Years (2012-2016), despite several, Growing then (particularly since 2015), Cyber-Attacks and other various Events for which there was, nevertheless, a Need for Trustworthy and Efficient Advise.

>>> But, Independently from that, we really Believe that Your Creation, "Elxis", is a quite Good and Promissing Internet Tool and Project, which seems to Fit Well current and Future Needs of the World Wide Community using Digital Networks, Able to Help Advance, shoulder to shoulder, with a Big Potential and Practicaly Contribute to unleash it Further on the Road Ahead towards certain Interesting Collective Horizons for our People and Society, (naturalky IF it's put in Good Use).

=> That's why, among various other possibilities, we Intend to Propose Dear "Datahell"s most Important "Baby", i.e. "Elxis",  (including, obviously, Yourself, if you Wish), for some Collectively, and Hopefuly WideSpread (both in greater Europe and elsewhere accross the World) foreseen Initiatives and Big Projects, possibly even Earlier than mid-2017 ! Naturaly, also according to relevant Developments).

But, that's another Story, (that we might Share soon enough, perhaps even here too, also Together with Many Other Faithful and Experienced "Elxis" Fans, Both Pioneer and Newcomers, (who should be particularly Welcome if "Elxis" becomes involved also in some Interesting and Useful, Key Collective Projects at a Large Scale in the foreseable Future of Digital Society in Europe and the World.

You couldn't find the link to the administration console (folder "estia") folder and you wrote all these??? Are you insane? I can't read it all, you are wasting our time. I dont think you have a real problem with Elxis but you might need psychological help. Case closed, topic locked.
