Title: Revive Elxis 2009.3 code
Post by: Amigamerlin on January 10, 2016, 01:52:53
Hello you all
just to inform you all that we, at Algostream, are thinking to revive ELXIS 2009.3 code and make it compatible with PHP 5.6 and above (thinking to arrive supporting PHP 7). This because we have a certain number of site built with ELXIS 2009.3 and we don't want to migrate to ELXIS 4.x since they performs so good and no problem at all.
For all our revive coding effort we will ask a one time little fee (30/35€) to the users that want to continue using 2009.3 for at least the next 5 years.
Obviously the revived code will get all the improvement and the bug fix we have already done to the original code for some of our customers. Please post here if someone of you is interested.
Thank you.

You cannot charge for Elxis, Elxis is free! You break the GNU/GPL license of Elxis 2009.x.
Also you don't own Elxis to revive it, Elxis, regardless its version has already a home and this is elxis.org. Elxis 2006.x, 2008.x, 2009.x, and Elxis 4.x have been developed by Elxis Team and the only official download/support sites are elxis.org and elxis.net
If you wish you can fork elxis 2009.x, name it as you wish but not Elxis, but even in this case you cannot charge for it because the license can't change!
Charge your customers for the services you provide to them, not for the software. There is a thin red line separating legal from illegal use.

Important note: Elxis 4.x license is different, you cannot fork Elxis 4.x

1) Yes... a fork is what we are going to do if we decide to do it !!!
2) I wrote here about because here are the interested gui. No more post about, once ready we will open a forum for supporting our community.
3) I know that we can't Fork ELXIS 4.x (and you can be sure that is not our intention) we respect rules.
4) Our CMS if we decide to do it will get another name. Anyway as GPL2 rules they will carry inside all the references to ELXIS 2009.x.

Now the part of your interest ... you are wrong ... GPL2 open source  can be sold too
As always you argue without know nothing about and I suggest you to deeply read GPL2 license with a lawyer ... in no part of GPL2 license  is wrote that open source software can't be sold for distributing service !!!

Do you want to prof ? Look at all the open source free Joomla component that has the Pro version. Many of them are open source and they are sold !!!  Many of them  are Open Source (GPL2 License included) but not free. Many of them starting as FREE open source apps (GPL2) and become a sold product.
This because the license doesn't explicitly prohibit to sell the software (When we speak of free software, we are referring to freedom, not price. ... this is taken from GPL2 license preamble).

Quote
Preamble GPL2 License

The licenses for most software are designed to take away your freedom to share and change it. By contrast, the GNU General Public License is intended to guarantee your freedom to share and change free software--to make sure the software is free for all its users. This General Public License applies to most of the Free Software Foundation's software and to any other program whose authors commit to using it. (Some other Free Software Foundation software is covered by the GNU Lesser General Public License instead.) You can apply it to your programs, too.

When we speak of free software, we are referring to freedom, not price. Our General Public Licenses are designed to make sure that you have the freedom to distribute copies of free software (and charge for this service if you wish), that you receive source code or can get it if you want it, that you can change the software or use pieces of it in new free programs; and that you know you can do these things ....

Again, as always, you read wrongly and missed the point !!! we will not sell or charging nothing !!! I wrote that we will ask a one time fee for our job and not for the code. This means that If I want, I can distribute the modified software as it's asking a fee for the service (ask your lawyer and read the license)

Finally, just to be clear: don't try to say me what I can do or what I can't do  ... I know very well the GPL2 license and I respect the rules !!!
If I wrote what I've wrote is because I can do it. If there's someone that don't know or don't respect GPL2 license that person are you Datahell (look at http://www.spambotsecurity.com/zbblock.php).

Bye

Create an Elxis 2009.3 fork and sell it. I wont argue with you on what GPL is. Just don't name it Elxis. Good luck with "your" CMS. I don't think you have something else to do here. This is the Elxis support forum. As for ZBBlock I have discussed the subject with them, we have different views on the subject. Their code is under removal from Elxis. Elxis Defender exist since Elxis 2006, before ZBBlock, so we don't need them. I redesign Elxis Defender for Elxis 4.4 using a filtering technology developed solely by me.

Case closed. Good luck.
