Title: Elxis 2007 preview?
Post by: datahell on March 25, 2007, 20:40:20
I need your opinion about the attached image (It is a design attempt not a real screenshot!). It shows the main screen in the administration panel. The icons/buttons are in the right side. This list scrolls up and down using javascript. You will be able to add your own shortcuts in this list. In the left gray area appears the buttons descriptions and the ARTI (Artifficial Inteligence - highly experimental) responses (ajax powered). In the black box bellow the gray area is a command line / chat box for ARTI. The design is inspired by windows Vista.

And a second design (I think it is better and more practical). About the pictures quality: Don't pay attention it is just a quick design/sketch.

With the grey background, most of the icons with white color on the perimeter will not be color suitable.

No, they will be fine. Don't look at the icons quality it's not that the issue. As I said it is a very quick design. The structure/whole idea is the one I ask for your's opinion. (By the way: The gray background is much better for transparency because you can hide the shadows flaws easier.)

The second design is much better. No doubt about that.

Will the administration panel be editable through a template?

Because I think that the word "vampire" and the dark template is a little aggressive.

(My opinion).

Your answers reminds me the way my girlfriend thinks. She, as you, need to see the whole picture in the proper colors etc to get the idea. I did not asked you if the color is good or the icons/buttons. I asked you about the design idea / structure of the whole thing as a replacement to the existing one.

These pictures are also a part of a templates, you can change templates if you dont like one! "Vampire" is the code name for the development release. Elxis 2007 will NOT be named Vampire. Elxis 2007 code name will follow the Elxis usual naming.

Thanks for your answers, it's ok.

Well... If everybody is giving you their observations about colors, that means that everything else is OK. I would consider that fact as good one.  ;)

Actually SVISTA means "delete them" in greek...... KLEISTA means "shut them down" (however we imply SVISTA as "shut them down" but this is not proper by the grammar's rules).

Datahell,

This box is the toolbox in the current elxis distro?
The classic menu will still exist right?
If yes then i have some ideas:

1) Ability to assign specific shortcuts per administrative group from the upper (parent) admin of any group or by the super admin (by this way you may have content admins with specific buttons, newsletter admins with specific buttons etc). So the toolbox must be role based (also the menus must transform this way)

2) Small or Big icons (size)

3) Text under the icons (as a legend) or as a tooltip or as it is right now (description) box

4) Ability for the user to add any function of the ordinary menus in the toolbox (usually they will add the ones they use most)

5) Ability to set the maximum number of icons in the toolbox (per admin group or globally)

That's all I can gather for the momment....  ;)

What i don't like, is the scroll bar on the right. It reminds me frames in a page.  :-\

It was just a design attempt. I want to change this area with something more practical. For now I have left this area intact. With BlackStar we have the same idea, ability to add shortcuts. I dont know if we finally impement it because there is an issue of what kind of shortcuts the system will be able to create. For core items only? For third party components also? We don't want to create a huge mechanism for this and we also should try to avoid the option of adding one more db table. We have an expirience in this by an ajax powered module named "Favorites" that I have created for Elxis frontend and soon will be released, so it may look like that. Till now visual changes are above this area.

Datahell,

The mechanism should not be huge (for speeds sake), you may implement a user friendly (point and click) routine for the core components and an advanced one in which the daring users may add the shortcut of their favourite components etc by adding its path (the physical path as we all are aware of /hthost/sitename/http/elxis/administrator/components/... for example.
Also an icon should be retrieved from the path /administrator/images/anything.png or the corresponding icon from the .php file entered previously (as far as i remember the menu icon file is stated in there right?)

So to summarize:

1) Point and click icon shortcuts (with the abilities I mentioned in my previous post/list) for the core components and maybe the components that will be made as add-ons from the Elxis Team/GoUp

2) Ability to add any components shortcut as an icon through manual entering of the component's .php file and setting of it's icon (if it is dificult to be retrieved from relative files) (this feature is the Feature "4" in the previous list but more detailed in terms of description.

The recommendation i made are not only proposed for user friendlyness but also for contributing to the main Elxis's motto "Professional". If the admins have the ability to tailor the shortcuts for different groups they gain the following:

1) Productivity of the users (because icon shortcuts are attracting their attention and become their daily dashboard)

2) Less frustration of the Users which means more happy users! By utilizing only the things they need the don't get messed with the menus which are quite "advanced" not to say cryptic some times.

3) Adding a custom description for the shortcuts does not leave inquiring minds like "errrr what was this icon for he/she said???? What the heck does the X icon's name means anyway?????? I'm confused, I'll call the web admin...."

There is also another usefull idea but i'm not sure if it is secure..... You could implement such a dashboard for site contributors (article editors and not site admins/maintain personnel) at the frontend level, it could also be ajax based which would be cool!

Please people comment this post...

Thanks for your patience

I believe that Vista stands for Virus, Intruder, Spyware, Trojan, Adware!
