Hello All,
Is it possible to re-install the site without shell access.. refer : https://forum.elxis.org/index.php?topic=975.msg5470#msg5470
Many host companies doesnt give shell access unfortunately..
thanks..

Of course you can. what u read is the easy way.
You can restore/move an Elxis site manually, through your hosting control panel (cPanel exc) and phpmyadmin for your database.
-
You can install your elxis one time. There is no reinstall task. You can only backup /restore after that.
Shell access has to do with your web hosting plan.

...Said!

I used the wrong verb(re-install) the correct is as u mention is to restore....sorry..
how can we restore the site without shell access?
any help appreciated..(any link or whattever.. can be based on joomla or wordpress drupal)
thanks..

in any case...
backup, reinstall, restore, install in diff server,transfer... even in new installations
elxis wants 2 things
1- files
2- database data
in any case through cpanel ftp shel ... what ever is the way we access a system
we copy those 2 things to or from the system elxis exists or want to transfer
the most common way to make a restore is not the shell(as very few has access) but an ftp-client and phpmyadmin(or other similar)
just override the database-data and elxis-files!
or in case of backup... download files and export the database with phpmyadmin

"export the database with phpmyadmin "
what does it mean i have sql or xml database downloaded already from admin panel??
cant i use that also?
thnx.
-
phpmyadmin is the most known sql-db management software(free) written in php
most hosting providers and most cpanels uses it to manage user databases
one of the functions of phpmyadmin is export(backup-download) the database
the opposite function is the import(restore) command
NOTE: elxis sql or xml backup of the database is the last tool you must use... in any case PREFER your cpanel's db-management-software... phpmyadmin or other
-
then why elxis has that feature????
i didnt know that... i was assuming same sql ( the admin and the phpmyadmin panel)
thanks thanks..

It can be done. But phpmyadmin (or other similar tool) is the easiest way ;)

Elxis provides you this tool for simplicity and easy backup of your database. You can take a backup and download it or save iot on the server regularly without having to visit the phpmyadmin page. The exported SQL file is not exactly the same as the one you will get from phpmyadmin (it is old-fashioned) but it is 100% usable if you be careful in what you check during import in phpmyadmin.

what we have to check than??? is there any article about that?

as datahell said the sql file you get from elxis is not exactly the same with the one that you will get from phpmyadmin......
main purpose of this tool is to very-quickly backup the database ... use it occasionally as extra-backup(just in case) but do your regular backups with phpmyadmin
since you are not an experienced user prefer phpmyadmin for export your database.... leave the other for more experience user!
remember that you have to import with phpmyadmin ... so do also the export with phpmyadmin... use the same tool for both
don't you have a phpmyadmin?
install it in any dir at your server... it is very easy

i have...
i thank you very much for that important data you are sharing..

There is no reason to continue this subject. As I said in a previous post the sql backup elxis takes is quite old-fashioned (developed 5 years ago) but 100% usable. I have used such backups many-many times without a single problem. You just need to know some basic things on how to restore an sql backup.
And something else: Elxis does not focus only on mysql. Elxis is ADOdb powered and supports different database types. So it uses, as possible, native sql queries in order to provide wider db support. This means that some very db specific features are not used because they are not sql native. The same is valid for PDO that is used by the new Elxis Nautilus. Elxis Nautilus uses vendor specific drivers to handle special tasks such as db backup, limit, concat, etc. Note: Elxis Nautilus can take back up for both database and files! (Elxis can backup it self!)
