Yes and no... but it's a long story. If you site has lots of big images, css, too much http requests, etc search engines won't like it. Maybe you should check http://www.websiteoptimization.com/services/analyze/

Many thanks for that...hopefully my site will be up and running one day, which is why I want to gain as much practical knowledge as possible regrading SEO, so any information, dummies guide or anything else would be very helpful.  I know Elxis is SEO friendly but SEO can't just be about the meta tags and titles///
