Title: Elxis homepage suggestion - list of outstanding sites made with ELXIS
Post by: pavel on January 13, 2009, 13:21:28
Hello everybody.  I have a suggestion about advertising Elxis.  All large CMSs have links to the most outstanding sites made with this CMS.  This is the first thing that visitors learning about a new CMS want to see.

What about Elxis?  There is a demo site with several standard templates preinstalled, elxis technical sites (downloads, extentions, community forms).   What about real end user sites?  The only place I discovered end user sites made with Elxis is this forum.

In my opinion Elxis front page should have a list of the outstanding sites with a unique design / good functionality that would make people deciding which CMS engine to use to say - wow, these sites are really great, I want my site to be build with Elxis!  Decision reg. inclusion in the list should be exclusively in the hands of elxis core team with no offence to site that are not included in the list.

What do you think?

You saying that elxis team must highlight some user sites....
this wouldn't be fare enough for the rest of them.

in the other hand who will put up the choosing criteria... and who can guarantee that the list of sites that will be choosen
will make  the majority of people to say "wow" ?

personally i don't agree with the idea,  elxis core team or even elxis-community must behave the some way to all

There is no need to put links to every single site made with Elxis.  10 or 20 per year may be sufficient.  Decision can also be by community voting or elxis team voting.

Guidelines can be established by Elxis community. Ideas that come to my mind are:

1) importance of a client (type of business, size, public awareness) - this will help other business of the same type to see what good elxis can bring them.  If one business sees that their competitor (or industry benchmarking firm) is using Elxis, then they will also want Elxis).

2) Design related: unique design/layout, use of typography, use of images, colors etc

3) best implementation of components/modules.

The purpose is not to upset elxis respectable community, but to attract more designers and end business users to go with elxis, thus stimulating a helathy growth of the CMS.

It is a kind of a "friendly" competition, also meant to stimulate Elxis community for healthy improvement.

Also, if you can easily demonstrate the abilities of the CMS to your client on real examples in the same business industry, it will be easier to convince the client that your offer is better than the one from your competitor offering another CMS.

In my opinion elxis people must stay out of any kind of highlighting/justing/choosing/mark or... or..     users sites

if there is need of showing such a list this must be done by users, with competitions among submitted sites and public voting,
this can be done... and once a year can elxis  publish the 10 most voted sites to a list for that year.

this is my personally opinion and it is not necessarily reflects  the elxis-core members opinions or thoughts on this subject.

I like the idea. I am thinking about something like this for some time. But it isn't so easy to do. But it is not easy to come up with some criteria that wold be trusted by everyone. Someone can vote for his site multiple times in order to get his site on top. I don't know...

Yeap... this could happen. So... It doesn't need to be a competition.

There's no need to nominate "the site of the year" or "the super duper site". Just to show some real end user sites. And only datahell can decide the sites he wants to show on elxis.org frontpage. This would be more fair for everyone.

Let's don't make the easy things... harder  ;)

That brings an interesting question to mind.

If a site is really good, does that mean that it will have a high google rank, and if so could this be used as a method of rating a "super" site?

I agree that there are many ways of boosting one's site through a poll or voting function.

Peter, it could be a very good (whatever that means) site, but NEW on the web.
So the Page Rank could not be a parameter. Right?  :)

The idea is to show the world (designers/developers and end users) what you can do with Elxis.  To show, how Elxis helped other people and how it can help them. This is true for end users as well as for designers who come accross Elxis and considering to start using it.

If this can also create a friendly HEALTHY competition, it is good.  if not - not a problem.  The reason why it is advisable to change the links: sites evolve get better year after year; it is good to show latest developments.

It will sure improve the google rank of the sites linked, so there is an incentive to design interesting.

There are many sites accross internet that review design trends and make their own lists of good sites.  Most of them are based on individual opinion of a person compiling the list, who reviews many submissions and chooses whatever he/she feels is best for the category.  Popular vote may work and may not work, look at what happens in Eurovision every year.

I couldn't agree more! This is the sort of exposure that Elxis really needs, real life examples of how this great CMS is used to solve everyday business problems and when I first started looking to Elxis (I'm not using it yet though) I couldn't find any sites that were actually using it. It seems like Elxis is only for developers, who make sites based on Elxis for their clients. End users need to see some great sites, to inspire and entice them.

I think it's an excellent idea and it should definitely be considered for the next version of Elxis.

It would appear that the I's are more than the nay's.

As such, being open minded as I am, that it should simply be a complete list to avoid any discrimination and that it should not be sorted in any way.  I would not add categories either because from what I've seen on the net, people like to add their listings more than once.

One more problem is to ensure that the listed site remains an Elxis production and has not switched to something else.
