Hi,
is there a recommendation for an  (simple) image gallery?

Component StarGallery has not yet been updated for Elxis 2008. I recommend you to use an external image gallery and bind it to Elxis using wrapper. You can even use a flash gallery using wrapper. There are many good galleries out there. Search!
