Title: Subcategories
Post by: Big Ben on November 12, 2006, 16:24:18
Hi Elias/Datahell,

i just checked it and i DON'T believe it!!  :o

ELXIS does not support subcategories???

Subcategories is an old problem from Mambo/Joomla that their  developers do not become it (embeded) working.

This feature is your (a)  change to become BETTER as others.

I'm not a php-programer, but... where is the difficulty???

A tree-structure is the first thing we learn about an OS.

Dear Big Ben,
What exactly did you mean with the word “Subcategories”?
Did you mean Category of the Section?

Because if you have install the Elxis without the demonstration data you will see only the section manager, but after when you will create at lest one section, you will be able to create and a category for the section.

Best Regards,
Sirigos Nick

Because Big Ben wrote about 'Subcategories' I think, he means _subcategories_.

@Sirigos,

you wrote: '... you will be able to create and a category for the section'

And I ask (and believe, this meant Big Ben): and where we will be able to create a subcategory for a category?

No Elxis does not support sub-categories yet, although in version 2006.4, we already made a small step to this direction (object now supports parent categories). Sub-Categories is a really useful feature but we did nt have the time to implement it yet. Elxis development done (and still based) on just two (2) people! We expecting people from the community to join us in order to spead up the development. This period we create sub-applications for Elxis so the main development has been frozen. Why? Because users continiously ask for free software. As for the difficulty: Subcategories is a very complex feature and not simple.

Any plan on introducing Sub-Categories feature. I am creating a World Travel Directory and even one level depth support from existing Section/Category would be great.

There is a plan to create a free directory component with sub-categories support.
For now there is sub-categories support to a number of third party components:
IOS Reservations (commercial), IOS Eshop (commercial), IOS Downloads (free), etc,...

As I said you in private it is much easier to develop a third party component that will do that job for you rather than modifying Elxis CMS in order to support sub-categories.
