Title: www.elxis-porting.com
Post by: Amigamerlin on August 31, 2010, 23:24:40
Hello to all, I'm really glad to annunce that www.elxis-porting.com is born.
As you will read this site is born to support elxis building a team that will try to convert some joomla component to elxis.
Unfortunately I'm not a programmer but I have a bit of experience (5 years) as Team manager of a group of programmer developing driver for a video card. (from 2001 to 2005 - Google my nick) As I've done in the past is in my intention to build a team that support elxis starting from user that love Elxis and want to help.

Probably we will fail the goal without the help of you all but I would like to try.

Currently 2 guys join us but they know ASP and just starting learning PHP and ELXIS and they are working on some really simple components patching them to correctly works on ELXIS.

Once the modules / bots will be done we will release them all on our site since I'm a little bit scared to put them on EDC because the nature of the patching / porting .

Obviously the user that will download and use this modules, bots, components will fully accept the security risk.

Thank you for your attention.

Regarding the software quality:

My recommendation is to create extensions by yourself and dont port others extensions into Elxis. By porting a foreigner's extension you do not have the complete control over the extension, you do not know which logical errors the original developer may did, you do not check for bugs and for security holes. It is much better to create smaller extensions by yourself which you will know 100% how they work and you will be able to support them.

Thank you Datahell for your suggestion. I hope we will become smart enough to can build our own component for elxis. Currently, as I said, we are just start learning. The good thing is that we are doing this just for fun since no one of us are directly involved in web development or use your CMS as professional users. Merely we are using ELXIS for our own site (just like me) and we are starting to do convert some Joomla component just for our use  :).

Datahell, all the thing can goes much simple if you will agree to be the "supervisor" of our job just to spot if the module, component, bot can have problem running inside ELXIS. No one can do this better then you. I  really hope you will give us this kind of help. Obviously, when you will patch / Fix something we will learn your modification for the next time.

Thank you.

If it is not something too big send it to me to check it before you publish it.

The biggest problem with the such extensions is not fixing some lines of code but the logic the developer applied to the extension. Unfortunately most developers are amateurs with low level programming skills and with limited imagination... Such extension can not be fixed unless you re-create the extension from scratch. When I see such extension, and most of them have such problems, I can not do anything. That's why I tell you to create extensions by yourself.

If you decided to port a joomla extension into Elxis (especially a component) then before you do anything else do this:
Search google for exploits for that extension before you start doing anything. Hundreds of joomla extensions are vulnerable to well known exploits. Do not port these extensions into elxis. Here is an sample list of exploits you can find on the internet: http://www.joomlaexploit.com/ (http://www.joomlaexploit.com/)
