Title: How to Set Up Forum in Elxis
Post by: de-active on September 09, 2009, 01:40:28
Hi all,

I have never used Elxis but intend to begin using it, but I am confused and the documentation is not helping either. This is only my opinion but the documentation for Elxis is as clear as mud (with all due respect) for a newbie like myself. There is just no clear step by step guide to what Elxis is and how one can use it or what one should do. It all seems defragmented and in snippets - I am talking about the wiki. Anyway that is only my opinion and this is why I am here and asking in this thread.

I will explain in very simple terms and hope you can respond in simple terms also:

I want to make a website with a forum. I want the homepage of the website to be the forum - much like here forum.elxis.org

So the question is can I use any forums such as PhpBB or do I need to use a specific "Elxis-friendly" forum for my Elxis based site? The website will be powered by Elxis (I hope if I can figure out how to use it), so does it have to be SMF? I know Elxis has a SMF Recent topic module, but this is not the forum, right? This is only a small program like a widget that tells you the latest topic on your SMF forum?

So the question is how do I install or integrate SFM Forum or any other forum into Elxis (or do I even need to do that?). Can this be done?

I want to use a forum when also using Elxis/IOSR so that that he users have to register and log in with one user name and PW - not one for the forum and one for IOSR or Elxis.

Your assistance is very much appreciated and please do excuse me for my lack of understanding of Elixs CMS (it's me and not Elixis)  ???.

EDIT: I just did further research and it seems, a native Elxis forum may not exist since powerboard is no longer supported, but my question remains: are there any solutions/alternative to my needs? Can I still have a forum that will only allow one log in for both IOSR and the forum?

you have never used elxis? ... whow!!! after 111 post? you had not even the curiosity to see it in action?

if you haven't  the object before you eyes no docs can help you understand and learn...
At the other side  there are thousands of users that learned elxis... without even the help of the wiki, it is not so hard (now with wiki) to learn if you give at least a try, we build wiki  to make users life easier,
we know that wiki is not completely(few of months life) and that it is not covering all topics... never will do such a thing since user questions is not always predictable.. thats why this forum exists, to cover any undocumented question... so  use this forum and wiki as a tool to explore-learn an elxis system.. there are tools, they wont teach you everything!
remember tools need an object to apply on or else there are useless!

i strongly recommend to do at least a local elxis installation or you will never really understand it even if we had millions of docs out there!

as for your questions.. you have already answered them by your self

LOL!  :D

No, I've used it in the sense, I've installed it, played around with it, both the demo version as well as the version I've installed, but I have not put it in action yet due to some external factors, not related to Elxis.

So, I haven't used it in the sense of deploying a real working website, but I've tried to fiddle with it and I am now fiddling with it more to see if I can mould it for my needs.

Thanks for your reply.

Just a suggestion, since I've now come across a number of posts and requests by users to have a updated native-Elxis forum, I think after you've completed your current work, this might be something you want to look at.

So what might be an idea is to install a forum phpBB or SMF and then used the Elxis SMF module to just show some of the latest posts on the main page. I think that's a good idea, I'll try this.

Also how light is Bubble? It says it's a light forum, what is meant by that exactly, what functionality is it missing or lacking?

I read somewhere that there was a forum component for Elxis 2008.x, but it has not been ported to the current version of Elxis. I would love to have a native forum component for Elxis as the users don't have to re-register to post in the forums and upgrading Elxis to newer versions will be painless.

Powerboard: Full featured forum but for Elxis 2006.x and still in beta phase. Unfortunately no one worked on it to develop it further.
