Title: simple way to add a front page
Post by: free on May 17, 2007, 10:22:43
looking for simple way to add a front page.

im new to elxis,
its installed in my main public_htm directory and generally works good.
recently i had a front page item display fine, then i did something and it disappeared.
now all i see is a text message saying...
"The page you are trying to access does not exist.
Please select a page from the main menu"

can someone tell me an easy way to make a page stick to my main http://mydomain.com url without it disappearing
ive tried front page manager but it just seems so confusing to get this cms to do what i want it to.

thanks

Hi free,

In Elxis, the front page of your site is controlled by the first menu item of menu mainmenu.

By default the first menu item is named "Home" and uses the frontpage component to display content items that you have selected to be displayed in frontpage.

The most common reason for the message you are getting, is that you have no content items published in front page.

Go to Content -> Frontpage manager. Do you see any content items?

Tip: You can select anything to act as your front page (autonomous page, component, content item, blog, wrapper) as long as the menu item that is calling it is the first in mainmenu.

thanks for the reply eliasan.
in frontpage manager i had the page listed there and published but on further checking
i had nothing in mainmenu.
copying it to mainmenu restored the front page as i wanted.
the tip "tipped" it off lol
thanks

uh oh..
thought it was solved, worked for the 1 page,
i tried adding a second  unpublished page to rotate between but when i tried to unpublish the first one and publish the second it wont show up.
it will still show the 1st one ok when i re-publish it but refuses to show the second one.
they have different id #s (not certain if thats effecting it)
the working one is like #15 and the one that wont is #38
everything else is the same such as added to mainmenu etc.

suggestions ?

edit*
i might have removed needed files by accident, ill try reinstalling elxis
feel free to post tips about this maybe there is a way to make this nice cms easier to use and understand..

Could you provide us a link to the "rebellion" site, or it's on your localhost?
You could also try and create new menu item that is linking to the component Front Page... but I would like to see what I'm talking about.

hi, my link is my1site.com (http://www.my1-site.com/)
as i edited in my last post,i am new to this whole cms thing, i really like what elxis has for features i just find it hard to do certain things.

i might have made a few errors like removing some default categories etc so just to set the record straight im going to re-install the cms and keep it at defaults untill im sure what i can remove without messing up other functions.
thanks

Try this next time.

First Menu Item Published -> This will display as your front page
Second Menu Item Unpublished

Now we want to show Second Menu Item as front page...

Second Menu Item Published -> Now this will display as your front page
First Menu Item Unpublished

uh oh..

i just finished reinstalling it and i kept the default settings and menu's.
seems to work ok just editing the default ones and using those.
(at least for now until i get the hang of this cool cms)
 ;D

wonderful cms when you get used to it..
but its terrible for us newbies who are not familiar with cms's
 ;)
