Title: pdf display of Chinese characters
Post by: xmanhattan on June 11, 2009, 19:29:47
Hello all,

Today I did inserted some Chinese text coping it from word to notepad to an Elxis content item.
The Chinese appears properly except when clicking on the pdf selection where the characters appear as square boxes.
Does the pdf function use a specific font or is it set for unicode?

This is still in my local testing area.

p.s.  I found that this error is caused after I moved the Elxis logo.png file into another directory.
TCPDF error: Missing or incorrect image file: C:\wamp\www\site\cache\jpgD7.tmp

and in most cases is  better to use ms-word to >>  tinymce past-from-word-plugin directly

Sorry, I didn't understand what you mean.  The Chinese characters displayed properly through html.

You have changed the subject I believe.

Is there a word plugin that will remove the word formatting before it is copied into the content items for tinymce that we can install?

still in subject....

notepad isn't the best tool to work with utf-8 and copy paste

the problem with fonts is one of the three...

1 error in pdf rendering (causing from a other bug or from code in article)
2 wrong enconding
3 missing fonts

i can't think of another reason for the moment.

there is a past-from-word plugin   .... just enable pust-plugin in tiny config (bots page) ... i don't know if this is relative to the error..
just mention it... never know!

... sent me the pdf with the squares, if you can .. to see

I guess that the standard font (de ja vu sans) does not support chinese characters.
includes/tcpdf/fonts/

It is the font, as I just visited the fpdf site (found the info in /tcpdf/fonts directory.

According the the author, it is not a good idea to even consider using this for Chinese and Japanese because the size of the font file will be very large.

I'm not sure UFPDF is a good solution for Japanese (or Chinese). It requires you to embed the TTF file in the PDF, which means several megabytes extra for Japanese fonts (even gzipped).

Therefore I have decided to simply hide the pdf button at this time.
As long as they can read it online that is good enough for the moment.  If they wish to have the font implemented then I will do it for them.

Thank you guys.
