Title: Frontpage Error message on Top (PHP Warning-Compilation failed.Expression +long)
Post by: Sunlight on March 28, 2012, 15:45:01
URGENT Help needed :

- Above the Headings, at the Center, suddenly (without having done anything on the site's structure) appeared an annoying message, which disfigures the Website :

Quote from: Php Warning
"PHP WARNING" with 2 squares : "View Error Details" and "Hide".

+ When you click in the square : "View Error Details", => the following (long) Text appears
(always in the middle of the website, above the Headings) :

Quote from: View Error Details
PHP: preg_replace() [function.preg-replace]: Compilation failed: regular expression is too large at offset 74235
uri: index.php

path: /components/com_frontpage/frontpage.php

version: Elxis 2008.0 Stable rev1891 [ Olympus ] 10-February-2008 00:39 GMT+2

WARNING(2): /home/www/a86cb97deebffd5af2cbaf5b2558384e/web/includes/Core/utf8.class.php, line 151

===>>> Please, could someone tell us what might have caused that problem, (perhaps the fact that sometimes we write too LONG HEADINGS in our Publications ? or an E - Aggression by a sly Hacker ?),

and, most of all, HOW TO REPAIR IT !

Many Thanks for a promp, efficient and clear/comprehensible reply,
(if possible for Elxis community) .

What's going on : There is nobody "alive" today in Elxis' Forum ?

Never seen that before, neither here, nor elsewhere !

Usually, in other Software's fora (and here, at Elxis, in the Past) you have at least 2 or 3 persons offering kind and efficient, handy help, on such elementary practical questions on how to use Elxis' software..

=> Elxis had some Good Ideas, at the beginning, and apparently deserves to be developped further, as well as to make it better known, throughout the World.

It's a Pitty to let it down, to abandon it, (including various People who believed in Elxis and are willing to give it a growing Chance to finally make a breakthrough Worldwide, in this, as well as in any New Version)...

Hi Sunlight,

Please give us the link if you want us to help you. Or at least some more info about environment, like software versions etc. GNU/Linux version, PHP version, etc...

Or send me login details via PM.

Hi Ivan,
good to see that you're "alive" and hopefully active...

Regarding your questions, here is some more info, in addition/reminder to what we had already provided from the start :

1) Here is also a PHOTO of the incident, (as already described above) :

---------------------

2) On the "environment", concerning "Software Version", as you ask,

=> it's : version: Elxis 2008.0 Stable rev1891 [ Olympus ] 10-February-2008 00:39 GMT+2

(as we had already noted above, from the start)
--------------------------

3) On "Php" version, our Host says today : "PHP 5.2"
----------------------------------

4) About "GNU/Linux version" (?), don't understand exactly what you mean (f.ex. "GNU" here ?), nor what might be the relation with our problem.

At least, according to our Host, on the Linux used : "Linux kernel = Linux (Debian) 2.6, and lib 2.3.X"

One thing is sure : We didn't change, neither our own Software and/or versions, neiher Host, (perhaps HE might have changed something ?), and Elxis was warking quite well for some Years now, when this problem suddenly appeared.
-----------------------------------

5) By the way, could this incident, perhaps, have any relation, whatever, with the following problems "solved" in Elxis' Forum in the past ?

https://forum.elxis.org/index.php?topic=2634.0  (NB : "ATTACK" from Hackers, => URGENT to act ?!)

Sorry, I failed to notice the above. This is your problem. You should have updated your Elxis installation.

Sorry, I failed to notice the above. This is your problem. You should have updated your Elxis installation.
---------------------

a) But, what relation might exist between updating the Elxis version and that problem (or "attack", as one of DataHell's earlier publication says : See above), dear Ivan ?

Apparently, it has nothing to do with that, since we are using the 2008 Elxis' version since many years and it worked fine, when, suddenly, that strange problem emerged out of the blue only a few weeks ago...
-------------

b) At any case, update from one version to another, (and even more : from 2008 up to 2011 there might be 2 or 3 updates to do, no ?...), is not so easy and simple to do... Particularly since it seems that it affects even the appearance, the layout of any website, and this took us Many Hours/Days of work to put it right. I.e. a lot of Time, that we don't have now, (being even Delayed in our work, that we must catch up urgently). So, we planned to update to a new Elxis' version only during Summer...

=> Can't we do something else, more simple and fast, in order to urgently settle this sudddenly provoked problem (probably an attack : Comp. supra) ?

I believe you didn't have any problems earlier because your server had older PHP version and they upgraded it recently.

If the real cause of that sudden, unwarned appearance of the above mentioned problem might, indeed, be a need to "Upgrade" the Elxis version, as you advise,

+ in that case, given that Upgrading from an original 2008 Elxis version up to the latest 2009.3 (and/or soon, maybe Nautilus brand new version) often is Difficult for non-specialist Users, who don't even have enough time to loose on Technicalities, and even Risk to loose and/or Disfigure their work of many Years, that they urgently need to be constantly operational,

=> could you kindly help us to SIMPLIFY, in a crystal-clear and Safe way, (according to your Experience), the Upgrade procedure (from 2008 to 2009.3, etc) ?

(F.ex., how to avoid eventual Destruction of our LAYOUT ?. How could we RETURN to the Original version/Website layout, -f.ex. thanks to a Back-up, etc- IF the upgrade fails ?; etc).

Both for this, and perhaps other various reasons, not only we need it, but it could also be useful for many other Elxis Users.

Thanks for any prompt and useful reply.

Title: Needs debug
Post by: datahell on August 15, 2012, 19:41:05
I need to debug your site to tell why this error is generated.
I assume it is because of outdated PHP code in Elxis 2008.0.
An other problem is hidden bellow this error message and only a debug can reveal it. You see the conducted error, not the real cause.
Updating to the latest Elxis version most probably will solve the problem, but I cannot tell that for sure without debug as the problem might be related to the server and not to elxis (a bad setting/change in php settings for example).
If you just want to solve this problem for sure you can contact me in private and give me ftp access to your site to debug it and suggest you what you should do.

BTW, Elxis 4.x does updates to the installed extensions with just one click. The core is something else and I can't tell now the same for sure.
