Title: User's Content Submission Editor Questions
Post by: Webcrawler on March 18, 2012, 08:09:51
I have 2 questions concerning the User's Add Content Editor:

For some reason, the cursor does not appear in the Intro Text area of the front end editor.  At first I thought I could not type in it.  However, I found out that I can type and insert an image, even though they do not appear in the editor, but it does show up on the published article. ???  The Main Text Editor works fine.

I have given add, submit and edit permissions to register users.  I can add and publish as a register user, but how can I edit the article as a user?  I did not see any link that will take me to edit an article.

Thank you in advance for your help.

Please disregard the first question.  I was using Windows XP Professional at first.  I just tested it on Vista 7 and it works.  I still need an answer on the second question.  Thanks!

Hello Webcrawler,

As an admin you will find on the menu bar CONTENT and under that SUBMITTED CONTENT.  This is where you what you will use if the content requires authorization by a user with higher access.

If you have given them permission to submit regular content, then you should find it in the ALL CONTENT ITEMS area.

Hi Xmanhattan,

1. The user submitted content are not showing up in "Submitted Content." However, they do appear in "All Content Items."

2. Maybe my original question was not clear. I was asking how can a "User" edit their own content.  Permission has been given for Add, Submit and Edit (own). I did not see any link for a User to edit his own content. Is that not a feature? There is an "Edit" permission for the User, so I am thinking that he should be able to edit his own content.

Thank you.

Assuming that you gave them the correct access, e.g. editor, then they should be able to see find their content pages.

Check this  http://wiki.elxis.org/wiki/Access_Manager_%28ACL%29 (http://wiki.elxis.org/wiki/Access_Manager_%28ACL%29)

Are you giving them front end or back end access?  That is where the main difference is.

Hi Xmanhattan,

I am referring to a User being able to edit content from the Front-end Access.  Add all, publish own & edit own permissions have been granted.  Seems that once the content has been submitted, it can't be edited from the front-end. I have tried all the front-end groups and I get the same results.

I would like to be able to allow a user to edit his content from the front-end, even after it has been submitted.  Is that possible?

Thank you!

With regards to access privileges, the registered user is very limited, you probably have to change them to an author or editor depending on what you want.
The author can write and modify their own content, whereas the editor can write or modify all front end content.
I will see if I have a test setup showing the difference.

Hi Xmanhattan,

1. I have tested  all the front-end access groups and have not found a way to edit content that has already submitted or approved (transferred to "All Content Items") on the front-end.  I also made sure that "action-edit-content-own" has been granted for all the testing.

2. I have also encountered the following when testing User without "action-publish-content-own" permissions:
- I would first approve the content and publish it on the back-end as the admin.
- The content link shows up in the User's "Content Submission" page, but not on the webppage where it is supposed to be under it's proper Menu Category.
- When I click on the link in the User's "Content Submission" page, I get a "404 Page Not Found" error message.
- This does not happen when testing User with "action-publish-content-own" permissions. User can check the "Publish" box and "Submit." Everything works fine. There is no error messages and the content shows up on the webpage under it's proper "menu Category."

Thanks again for helping.

Please disregard the 2nd issue on my prior post.  I figured out that the content is displayed base on what group they are assigned to.  However, I would still like to get an answer to the 1st item.  I need to be able to have a user edit their own content from the front-end, after it has been published.  Thanks!

The access privileges is restricted for a purpose.  There is nothing wrong with them but rather you are asking to change access for your requirements.

You want to change the registered user group to include additional features, and assuming the responsibility that it has doing so.

Look at the ACCESS area from your control panel and check the differences between the REGISTERED and EDITOR allowed through the EDIT PERMISSIONS.  Then you can assign what you want to the Registered user.

Yes, I have already done that. I have tested the "User" as "Editor, Author and Publisher." I have also tested the "User" as "Registered," with "Edit Permissions." I have not been able to see any link that would take me to edit any "Published Content" at the Frontend. The only option is "Add Content."  You can edit content before it is "Published" but not after. Am I missing something?

Check that the modules USER MENU and USER LOGIN are placed where you want them to be, e.g. left or right columns, and published.

Once the user logs into the system, the user menu will appear.  Depending on the user that logged in, they will be able to see either add content or submit content.

Once they click on add content, they will see a page allowing them to add new content and displaying any of their content pages under that which they can edit if they wish.

Yes, there is a link to "Add Content."  Depending on the permissions given, it will allow you to "Add and Submit." It will also allow you to "Edit," only if the content has not been submitted yet. Once the content has been submitted, there is no link to "Edit" the content, even though "Edit Permissions" has been given. I have tested all the frontend groups, but the results are always the same (as indicated above). Thanks!

Okay, I see what you are saying now.

Sorry to say that you will have to send a short note to datahell or webgift to answer the problem of how to get content item links on the front end for access privileges higher than registered users.

Simply send them a link to this problem.

Since Elxis 2008.0 editing articles from frontend is not allowed.
Once the article is published it can not be edited from frontend.

If you want such functionality for your users create eBlogs for them.

Hello Datahell,

Out of curiosity. Why is the EDIT feature no longer available at the frontend? Is this a security issue? I am thinking about having it customized. Do you not recommend it? You comments will be appreciated. Thanks!

Because most probably the article will not be checked again by the admin. It will be published immediately with an unchecked content. Through the editor someone could insert malicious javascript, iframes, or even curse, write bad words, use huge bold characters, etc. This is why I don't recommend using front-end submission. The recommended way is via eBlog.

Hi Datahell,

Thank you for clarifying. I have 2 other issues related to the frontend USER CONTENT SUBMISSION EDITOR:

1. While using Firefox, there is no cursor in the INTRO TEXT EDITOR. I know I can type in it, because the text will eventually show up in the submitted article, but I can't see any text while typing. The MAIN TEXT EDITOR works fine. I tested on Firefox 11, on Windows XP Professional and Windows 7. This does not happen when using Internet Explorer.

2. I have noticed that when I publish (approve) user added content from the backend as the admin. it takes 6 to 7 hours before it actually gets published.  I can see that the ARTICLE has been transferred to ALL CONTENT ITEMS (backend). There is a link to it in the frontend under CONTENT SUBMISSION -> YOUR LAST 5 PUBLISHED ARTICLES, but when I follow it, it gives me a 404 page not found error. The submitted article eventually shows up after 6 to 7 hours on the webpage, and the broken link works fine then.

Your help will be appreciated.

1. Most probably your site has white text in template css. You can change that easily. Check this: http://wiki.elxis.org/wiki/TinyMCE_editor_background

2. It's about server setting. Namely, time offset. In example: your server is in USA, hence -6 hours. You can set time offset in Elxis global configuration.

Ivan, I just logged into my test setup as a Publisher and tried to edit an item.
The Intro Text (Required): area does not display the text even though I added it as html.

I added the following line to the template_css.css file:
Quote
#tinymce.mceContentBody { background-image:none!important; background-color:#fff!important; }
as mentioned in the wiki but it did not correct the situation.
I also tried setting:
Template CSS classes: no
Code: [Select]
http://localhost/electra/templates/okto/editor.csswith a white background and black font color but it still does not work.
The Main Text (Optional): edit area works normally.

I just found part of the problem and it is either firefox or possibly the use of the web developer because when I used outline current element the text in the intro area displayed itself.

If anyone is seeing this problem, switch to another browser to see if it works, I tried it IE and it works.

Also works in Chrome and Opera.

Seems to me that both the INTRO TEXT EDITOR and the MAIN TEXT EDITOR are calling the same TinyMCE editor. How come it works on one and not the other? They are both on the same page.

An IOSR user has a similar problem with the second editor instance (no problem with the first instance). He sees it empty and with white background while I see it fine with css and containing text. There are no javascript errors, firefox error console is empty. We both use Firefox, so it is very strange! If anyone manage to find out what causes this issue please write it down. For me everything works fine...

I further tested the TinyMCE Editor on Firefox & IE. I found that the Unordered List and the Ordered List do not work property. It works with text centered and flushed right, but do not work when flushed left. Insert/Edit Link and Unlink do not work. Abbreviation, Acronym and Citation do not work. Please advise. Thank you!

This is a template css issue. You can disable loading template's css in editor or even create a special editor.css stylesheet.
This is not a problem.
