Title: Module to collect news from other sites ? - Edit: Add RSS to Blog Compoment
Post by: ROUBOS on June 16, 2011, 19:14:29
Hi,
I was reading the Linux inside magazine, and there was an article on Drupal. I noticed that there is a Module "Aggregator", that collects news from other sites and displays them on your own site.
Is there a similar module for Elxis? Is this possible?

thanks

1. first make newsfeeds from  site you want
2. in UCD modul set "Newsfeed Category" or "Newsfeed Item"

OK tried it and it does work. I was wondering if it is possible to display these items in the form like "ΑλήθειαPortal - Τελευταία Νέα..." and also to open the links in a new tab of the browser and not on the same page.
I guess I can format the page with <div> tags in square formation and display multiple copies of the UCD on the same page.
Any other module that could do the same job?

thanks for the replies

Elxis Downloads Center has a lot of tools which in combination with your imagination you can create a lot of things.

Below i give you the idea how i have done this on a site 3 years ago and i think that worths to try it.

a) Install into your site module iTabs (http://www.elxis-downloads.com/downloads/sliders-scrollers-tabs/164.html) which in it's description refers:

iTabs is a simple module for displaying module positions using mootools carousel. Here's how it works:
1. Create custom module and publish it at some position (eg. user5). Then publish user5 at any of 5 tabs. Off course, you can create your own positions.
2. Publish some existing module at existing position. Publish selected position in selected tab.

b) Create a new user module and going into parameters there you can insert the RSS URL with control to Feed Description, Feed Image, Number of Items, Item Description and Word Count.

c) Do the same for the rest 4 positions of iTabs and enjoy a nice result!

And if you want to insert more feeds, then you have to add more positions on iTabs module which this needs some hard carefull job and you have to add also as many extra module positions you need from Templates Manager.  I have done it for 20 positions.

can we have RSS news showing just like blog style content items? As per normal, instead of displaying the content items on the main page in blog view, we display rss news from other sources

You propably did not try the above way of RSS display. Try it and your question will be answered.  ;)

OK
installed eTabs, and I do display the RSS feeds. 5,10 per tab etc. But this does not do what I want it to do, or I'm not understanding what you're trying to tell me.
I need to have menu linked to sections/categories. Even UCD can display max of 30 items. Look at newsbeast.gr
I want the rss feeds to be used just like ordinary content items. Entered to the database. Not flashing one after the other.
A feed comes is, taken as a an item and entered in Elxis just like a typed up item. Under a section/category specified.
Hope I'm making sense.

Can it be achieved with the eBlog?

Ok you started this topic with title module collecting rss news and I just mentioned what i have done which does this you initialy asked for and looks also as blog, but you propably want something very custom as i see frrom your last post, which escapes from initial topic's title and is not looking to be just a module.

yes that's true. just did not want to make yet another post. Don't want to be flooding the forum with similar topc posts.
Even though it seems like I am lately  :-\

Can we add RSS feeds to the Blog component? This would be great and will be able to auto-update the site with news etc.

doing some searching, I came across this http://www.rss2cms.com/

I notice that there is a plugin for wordpress cms that does this. Is there something similar we can do for elxis? Is there a way?  http://wordpress.org/extend/plugins/feedwordpress/

have you used this bot: KL RSS FEED (http://www.elxis-downloads.com/downloads/remote-content/191.html) ?
Title: Re: Module to collect news from other sites ? - Edit: Add RSS to Blog Compoment
Post by: ROUBOS on June 21, 2011, 18:01:45
I seen that KL RSS Feed bot.
From what I understand, you attach this bot on an item or autonomous page, to bring in rss feeds. But does not create a new item like I want it to do.
Title: Re: Module to collect news from other sites ? - Edit: Add RSS to Blog Compoment
Post by: webgift on June 21, 2011, 19:03:45
It's a bot. So you can use it to as many content items you like or you can copy-paste the bot's pattern at the same content item with different parameters each time.
In case that you want to publish the results of these content items or autonomous pages to a module position, you can do that by using that module (http://www.elxis-downloads.com/downloads/content/215.html)

thanks for the reply,
I want the rss feed to come in and be posted onto the site as per normal content item, with its photo if any. The user of this site will not be able to enter bot info etc.
has to be as automatic and as simple as possible.
Wordpress has this plugin. And this http://www.rss2cms.com/ looks ok. About start reading it to see if I can apply it. = No Luck :(

yes it does suck.
unfortunately only wordpress has what this client wants. Going to try it out tonight and see how I go. After 7 client sites I've created using Elxis I'll try out wordpress for the first time.

Dear Roubos

I watch your posts carefully about you requests and as i said previously on one of my answers you want something custom which can not be satisfied with available tools. So you could try to order (https://forum.elxis.org/index.php?board=48.0) it and maybe somebody will be interested to develop it.

If such a module will be, then it will just steal content from other sites automatically without any special effort
have such bots for other cms

this is pure theft of content from other sites!
I do not understand why you are such imports news from other sites.
Want to make a website without the expense of content?
in any case thrown out of the issuance of search engines all duplicates made without the permission of authors

wbread I agree with you although it is not illegal to display RSS feeds from other sites. RSS feeds exists exactly for this reason.
The ideal would be all the content of your site to be unique but in some cases this can not be succeeded 100%. Think of news portal sites for example. All such sites have the same news and many times taken by the same news agent, so the articles are even identical...

I am not against rss, but that they were short and with reference to the original
Why create rss of constant content in database.
news portal can use the fact that there is, just use journalists to create content for a sample of those rss news that does not lose relevance over time.

No content items are set.
AND id IN ()
"IN" should contain comma separated article ids. eg. AND id IN (1,4,12,7,52)

Title: Making an extension RTL Compatible
Post by: webgift on December 17, 2012, 12:24:16
You can make an extension compatible with RTL (Right To Left) languages by yourself. You must find out where the css file is declared from the php file and then create a new css file to the relative directory with the prefix (-rtl)

Let's see an example for the modules:
1. Open the php file of the module that is placed in directory modules/
2. Search for the pattern (.css)

Elxis 2009.x
3. In case that RTL language is not supported you have to create it by using the constant variable _GEM_RTL
For example:
$baseurl = $mainframe->getCfg('live_site').'/modules/mod_mymodule';
$cssfile = (_GEM_RTL == 1) ? $baseurl.'/mycss-rtl.css' : $baseurl.'/mycss.css';

Elxis 4.x
3. In case that RTL language is not supported you have to create it the $sfx variable as described below:
For example:
$sfx = eFactory::getLang()->getinfo('RTLSFX');
$baseurl = eFactory::getElxis()->secureBase().'/modules/mod_mymodule';
$eDoc->addStyleLink($baseurl.'/includes/mycss'.$sfx.'.css');

4. Go to the directory /modules/mod_mymodule and create a new CSS file named: mycss-rtl.css
5. Open mycss.css file, copy the css code and paste it through to mycss-rtl.css file.
6. Now you must change all of the left alignment to right and the right ones to the left.

Examples:
text-align: left; to text-align:right;
float: left; to flat: right;
margin: 2px 5px 0px 10px; to margin: 2px 10px 0px 5px; (margin: top right bottom left)
