Title: Is Elxis CMS going to be always free?
Post by: eliasan on January 22, 2007, 18:00:55
Today, I received an interesting question from an Elxis user.
He asked me if "Elxis will always be a free software?"

The short answer is YES!

The long answer:

That kind of questions, shows one thing.

Most people (including me sometimes) do not read the license under which a software is released or they do not spend some time to learn about the license.

Elxis CMS is released under the GNU/GPL license (http://www.gnu.org/licenses/gpl.html). That practically means that it will always be a Free Open Source Software, no matter what!

Although, according to the GNU/GPL license, "When we speak of free software, we are referring to freedom, not price", Elxis CMS will always be a "free as a speech" and "free as a beer" software.

To be honest, it was tempting to choose the "free as a speech" instead of the "free as a beer" explanation of the GNU/GPL, not only for us, but for a lot of people creating open source software out there.

The reasons we stayed and will stay on "free as a speech" interpretation of the GNU/GPL, are the facts:

a) that we based Elxis on Mambo that was also released under GNU/GPL and no-one ever asked us money for,
b) and the competition from other FOSS CMSes.

Based on our experience, Open Source business is a service business. Not a product business.

So, we can give the "product" for FREE!

yeah thats correct you can also make money out of open source for example many people use open source projects and when they use it they need some professional and technical support then you can charge them for extra work you done for example i had created many components for the people who uses open source mambo or elxis but they want specific components or need template design.
