Title: (Frontpage Module) : How to Open Boxes' Content at the Top of a page (SOLVED !)
Post by: Sunlight on March 18, 2009, 06:45:23
How to open News-"boxes"' content at the Top of the 1st page (instead of down to the Middle) ?

Currently (with standard template okto) all "boxes", links, etc. containing Texts, Images, etc. open (after clicking on them) only towards the Middle of the Frontpage, obliging to scroll-down in order to see and read their content.

People who don't know that, see nothing at the Upper Half of the 1st page, and leave the Website, thinking that there was no Content inside the Boxes !

Because currently, the content of the opened box is displayed only after the 4 "Boxes", and after the "Read also", as well as after the "latest News"', etc., starting down at the second half of the 1st page, (which usually is not even seen at the Computer's screen, unless someone knows the problem, and scrolls-down to search and find it)...

=> In order to simplify things for New Readers, what should be done in order to be able to open the "boxes"' content (after clicking at them) to the Top of the 1st page, or, (if necessary) at another, independent page/window, (i.e. without the "boxes", the "read also" nor the "latest news", etc. which take the space of the upper half of the 1st page currently) ?

Thanks, if possible, for a clear answer, easy to understand by newbies...

i would like to ask if you are using seo?
if not then strongly recommend to do so!

seems that you are using module frontpage in all of your pages....
why don't you assign it to your home page only ?

What relation ?

We suppose that it works since Elxis' installation. How can it be verified ?

We tried to do as you said, but apparently this module is already "linked" to "Home page", and there is no obvious, apparent way to "assign" it as you advise.

=> TIME is running out, and the need for a crystal-clear, simple and efficient info on Elxis has become, since long, urgent !
An efficient website needs TIME to develop its substantial CONTENT, and it does not let more TIME to waste on elementary formal points, on how to use a software supposed to be easy and with the ambition to become Popular among millions of webmasters accross the World..

The question raised remains still unanswered.

Isn't there any simple and efficient, crystal-clear solution ?

Elxis' readers need to be able to see at the top of the screen any page they chose , after they click to aprecise item.

Is it really so difficult to clearly explain how this elementary thing can be obtained, (i.e. without "Frontpage", etc. keeping always the top of the screen, even after readers click and select a precise item) ?

Everything can be parametrized. What you get after the installation is a SAMPLE website. Normally you should edit everything and add your own stuff. You should also change the template and not use the sample one. You should set the modules to be displayed wherever you like. Every module has parameters. Edit the module to set if you wish titles to be displayed as links, etc. In the frontpage the "frontpage" module is being displayed by default. You can change that. You can also move the front page module to an other module position in order for the normal content to be first in the page.

You can do everything you like, just search a little Elxis and you will find the answers to your questions.

As said earlier, we have already done that.

But it didn't change anything : Whenever you click at a Box, its content is shown always AFTER the frontpage module, i.e. in the MIDDLE of the screen, (See above)..

See in which module positions you have set the modules to be displayed... When you change the order, you change the order of the modules that belong to the same position. Which position is being displayed first is set in your template's index.php file (function mosLoadModules).

what box .. content or what ever is this... you trying to list before frontpage module?(any content?)

you have your frontpage module listed on all pages...right? is that wanted? i have asked you why you assign it on all pages ... well frontpage module is designed to appear and be practical only in frontpage...
but this is not a rule.... there are plenty of solution...and ways to use it!

but first make clear what you want.....

if want frontpage to apear on all pages and need to change position to list bellow main content you need a new module-position(if not exist) bellow content(mos mainbody)

if want first page as is and all other to list module frontpage bellow content then most probably(if you haven't patched it)  need to duplicate and modify as above your template

I believe topic starter means '' newsflash | (newsflash) ''. As this is the first content reciever or something like that it is not connected to any modules. In the sample template mosMainBody stands under the mosLoads, so i think the only option is to transfer mosMainBody above all frontpage modules.

I is quite odd, because I had the same problem and had to look for a long time before I saw my problem. So please correct me if I am wrong, but I think thats it.

Btw, I find it very strange that Elxis is less popular than other cms like jaws and modx. I have tried them all but this is by far the best one! Oh, this is my first post and with it hello to everyone!

We did as you said, but it does NOT solve the problem.

It only turns-it the ...other way round :

- Instead of having "Frontpage" Module AWAYS UP (as before : see above), now, it has it ALWAYS DOWN  (after the content) !.....

But, as already said (see above), what is needed is  :

a) Initially, to see the Frontpage Module (with its small boxes) at the Top of the 1st page,
(followed by other, full Content texts, under it).

b) Afterwards, when "readers click at one of the boxes", then, they should become "able to see  its Full Content displayed at the Top of the New Page which Opens.
(Not only in the middle, or at the end, after the boxes)".

It's the most Simple and Natural thing to do.
Normally, it should have been prepared at ELxis' default set-up, (or clearly explain how it can be done, fex. in FAQs), without people needing to waste so much precious Time !..

it is easy ...

How can this be done ?

[ a]  is already set, with the "Frontpage Module" being "assigned to Header position" for the "MainMenu", "Home", initial Page. => There it goes at the Top.

But for the [ b ] and/or [ c]  possibilities, i.e. for the "Pages which open to see the full Content" of a News item,  "when readers click on a small box" (Comp. above), it's NOT clear how exactly it could be done...

In the Administration Panel, the Frontpage Module apparently does not show any clear way to do what you said :

- It only leaves ONE choice (f.ex. for the "MainMenu Home", initial page, or for the "MainMenu FAQs", or for the "TopMenu" "Home", initial page, etc), to be associated with a "Header" or, on the contrary, with the "inset" "position".

=> How could we do differend assignements of the Frontpage Module to differend Pages, (f.ex. to the various "Newsflashes" that readers would like to open and read) ?

------------------------------------------

Perhaps, this might be the real issue ?

you modified your template ( adding inset position)

so you need to duplicate mod front_page... and assign it to all other pages except frontpage(home)

see attachment on how to duplicate a module ...
But in case of frontpage_mod... be careful

Never-NEVER-nEVER-NEVER-Never-NEVER-nEVER-NEVER-Never-NEVER-nEVER-NEVER

USE THE TWO INSTANCES OF FRONTPAGE_MOD TOGETHER AT THE SAME PAGE

you need at least the top level entry category link... you don't have? .... you create!

make at least one link to the category in mainmenu(or whatever menu working on) all items bellow should display the module...

Ps. this second frontpage_mod can take if you wish or need so... other configuration parameters
Ps2 suppose that you don't want to display any other link in your menu.. ok... make it ... and unpublished it... this way it will be visible for internal purposes but hidden to your template.

2- right-top corner.. hit new!

3- make link to category table or blog type....

4- select the category you want!

5- save.

done!

Astonishing, it didn't explode...

=> Fine : It Works !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!.......................

Where have you been all this time, dear Ks-net ?...
I'll probably ..lose my Job by the Time wasted until now, but, at least, Elxis works now !
Thanks buddy.

***

Let's resume, (even if hastily, without being complete), to help possible other Elxis' Newbies :

>>> If you want that your "Newsflashes" (or other Contents) are shown, at first,  in many small boxes (fex. with thumbnail photos, a part of the text, etc) at the Top of the initial, "Home" page, (thanks to the "Frontpage" Module), and afterwards, when readers click to anyone of those boxes, to be able to Open a New Page where the Content of the selected Newsflash will appear in Full at the Top, (without having to scroll down under the other boxes),

then, you must :

1) Install the Frontpage Module once, and assign it only to the "Home", initial Mainmenu Page.

2) Copy the Frontpage Module, and assign the Copy to all other Menus and/or Pages, (except from the previous, "Home", mainmenu initial page).

3) Add to the script of "index.php" file, at your "template" (fex. "octo", or other), the short sentence about "inset" position, etc, (as shown by "Ks-net", above).

4) Create a New Page at your menu (fex. "Mainmenu"), and link it to the Categories that you want to "open" as above.

5) Ensure that the 1st Frontpage Module is placed at "Header" position (it has it, by default), and place the 2nd Frontpage Module, (its copy), at "Inset" position.

(For Practical Details on how to accomplish these Steps, see the indications given by "Ks-net" in reply to our successive questions, above).

=> Simplifying suggestion : Why not install these possibilities "by default" to all Elxis' basic software, (or, at least, to the "FrontPage" Module, if possible), simply downloaded by internet ?  The function obviously meets an elementary, basic need of almost everyone, (at least among those who get the "FrontPage" module).
Title: Re: (Frontpage Module) : How to Open Boxes' Content at the Top of a page (SOLVED !)
Post by: Sunlight on June 17, 2009, 17:47:53

.... resume, ...:

>>> Or, perhaps, it might be enough just to do 1, instead of 5 steps ?

Simply : "Create a New Page at your menu (fex. "Mainmenu"), and link it to the Categories that you want to "open" as above."
