Title: What about a tamplate pre-release?
Post by: pcfun on November 19, 2007, 19:25:58
I would like to ask you something. As normally in the next 2-3 weeks (I suppose), the version 2008 will come to light, wouldn't be a good idea to give us, at least, the "okto" template so that we can start making our Elxis 2008 compatible tamplates, for our sites, or even make few ones to offer in the Elxis Directory after the release of the new version?
I don't think it would create any problem or any other issue the release of this template. It would only help us get ready for the upcoming version and it would also help the Elxis Directory to get free templates to distribute.
Please, think of it.

And something else... Why the name is okto (okto in greek means eight) ? Does it have any relation with the year 2008 or with the number of its modules... ?

"okto" was the temporrary name of the template during the development status but we liked it and keep it until the final version. "Okto" means "eight" in Greek and derives from the 2008 generation of Elxis.

It wont help to give you the Okto template as Elxis 2008 has totally diferrent html and CSS in comparisson with the 2006 generation. Elxis 2008 templates are useless in 2006.x sites. If you insist I can send it to you but believe me it is totally useless to you without Elxis 2008.

Notice 1: Elxis 2008 also loads automatically a standard.css file that does not exist in 2006.x.
Notice 2: Elxis 2008.0 is ready and stable but there are some other tasks we have still to do and although they do not have direct relationship with Elxis itself they are very important. So, we can not release Elxis 2008 until everything will be ready.

I asked for the template, not to use it in 2006.4 but prepare a good template for my new site, so that when 2008 comes, to be ready to use it. In addition, if i find time (as i am preparing my exams for the university) to build even one or two templates for your directory.
So the template i want it not for use with my current site but to prepare a good one for my new site that i will build when 2008 comes.
And if the Templates Guide that i read in a topic that you have prepared, is free, then i would like to have even this. This way i will learn building templates and in my way i will help Elxis directory to have new templates for E2008. The same i think will do many others if you give this source.
Thank you!

You must understand that you need Elxis 2008 itself to create a template for 2008. You can not test it on a 2006.x site. It will also produce errors if you test it on 2006.x.

OK. I understand. I just wanted to prepare some work for the version 2008 arrival. If you think it's useless then i believe you.
Regarding the guide i didn't know it was a paper book. I was thinking it would be even in electronic format for wide distribution. But if it is only in paper, then only in Greece it will be sold? Users from other countries that want this guide, how they will get it?

"Elxis 2008 also loads automatically a standard.css file that does not exist in 2006.x."

is that file stored in the DB (for fast loading like Typo) or as usual via file in the template directory?

"We have also many requests by local companies to translate/re-sell these books in their countries."

Have you already an italian language commitment for that? Maybe I might be interested...

The standard.css is a normal file located in the /includes directory. There is also an RTL version of it in the same directory named as standard-rtl.css. Standard css file is loaded automatically by Elxis core before you load your own template's css file so you can overwrite it if you wish. Standard css provides some general and nutral formating to the Elxis CMS for better site rendering as templates creators usually forget to set some important css elements.

Of course we are interesting. You should contact us after 2008 release.

You should nt worry about that, you live in Greece!  ;D

I don't live in Greece. I live in Italy. If you put this boook in market until 7/1/2008 i can buy it from Greece, otherwise i can't, as i will be at Rome. For this reason i asked you how you will distribute it worldwide...
Though, as the book comes in paper format, means it has been written for sure in electronic format. Why don't you transform it in PDF and sell it on-line.

After 1-2 months from the elxis 2008 release date you will have many solutions for Elxis CMS.

For example, if you release the book after 2 months i can't buy it from Greece. This means i have to buy it from Italy, in italian. But italian is not the language in which i like reading, as it is not my mother tongue. You understand? Only for these reasons i care.

We love Open source, and if we did nt have to eat we would create everything for free. But we have to live and that's why a small part of the software we create is not free.

Maybe you remember the past and you say these things. Though, the past has passed and i don't care if you sell it or give it for free. YOU make it, YOU decide. And i would like to ask you sorry for my past behaviour against the old price of EDir. It's up to you to decide whether you sell something or not. It's your job at the end.

I just wanted to know about the book's distribution in other countries. Nothing more.
