Title: 2008 release
Post by: canton on September 21, 2007, 09:22:12
Please could you tell us approximately at least when you will be releasing 2008. Need to know due to developing 2 major sites.
If not very soon then could you release it at least in beta distribution form so as to be prepared for it release.

The development has not yet completed. New version will be ready (for beta testing and internal use) by the end of September. Public release will be available at least one month later (November-December 2007). We do not publish beta versions. Only stable versions are published. The only way to have Elxis 2008 earlier than November 2007 is to host your site in GO UP Inc servers. In this case notice that the installed version may not be the same as the final version as until the final release date we may change/add things and fix possible bugs. Also you wont get/download the Elxis package. We will install it for you. Finally, there is a lot of translation and other stuff that yet has not started. We will soon release language files for translation.

Solutions:
1. Wait till November/December 2007 for the public release.
2. Install 2006.4 and afterwards upgrade to 2008.0 (Notice that the differences between 2006.4 and 2008.0 are huge. You can not update Elxis manually. The update script will make the update procedure very easy (a few mouse clicks) but it might be commercial - at very low cost. Why? Because we work 1 year at this version without being paid, we have left our jobs and work for Elxis for free, no one makes donations and we must find a way to support Elxis financial. So a low price on the update script will be a helping hand for the project).
3. Wait 1-2 weeks and host your site on GO UP Inc servers with beta version of 2008.0. In this case you must understand that you will use a beta version officially unsupported.

Here is a small article by me announcing some features of Elxis 2008.0 to third party developers.

http://jcd-a.org/component/option,com_smf/Itemid,28/topic,551.0/

Some other features:
- Ability to hide administration login page.
- Ability to have front-end only published for you.
- Totally new installer more powerful (it also creates automatically database if it does not exist).
- More css classes makes possible to have specific appearance for certain elements (like heading article in a blog).
- Multi-lingual help system.
- Ability to have polls published but to forbid voting on some of them (closed and open for voting polls).
- Full featured user\'s profile system.
- Many fixes for speed tuning and optimization (mambots, cache etc).
- Benchmark speed tests for developers.
- Initialization of importing new databases in Elxis like iBase, FireBird, Oracle and MSSQL.
and many more...

I think this phrase from the "Lord Of the Rings" (my favorite movie) tells everything about the new Elxis: A new power is rising (Sarouman speaking to the Orks - The Two Towers)

In Elxis.org extended information is only available to "Elxis Community" members.

Everything will be announced on time. As I wrote this is just a thought. Don't ask more as it is not certain.

Regarding the 2008 please stay to what we officially announce. We work very hard everyday for this release, the only thing we ask you is to wait.
